Nearly every Winter Olympic Games adds a new event to its ever growing list of competitive sports, and this year's Vancouver Games were no exception. Then again, adding a new sport doesn't necessarily mean it will become a success, as shown by the ill-advised, miserable disappointment that was uphill skiing.
"Yeah, that event did not go well," said uphill skiiing creator Tom Rider, who has never actually gone skiing himself. "I figured skiing was so popular that I'd create another event. Since nearly every other skiing idea had been exhausted, I figured why not ski uphill? Apparently it's a lot more difficult to ski up an entire mountain versus the traditional downhill or slalom skiing. Who knew? At least I assume it was more difficult since not one of the world class athletes in the event completed as much as half the course."
Disappointed that uphill skiing completely flopped, Rider is turning his creative energies toward the development of other Olympic events such as Cross Country Hockey, Bobsled Curling and Triples Figure Skating.
It's a weird world of sports, but Winter Games have charms too (L.A. Times)
