NBC Sports Group has announced that on January 2, 2012, Versus—a Comcast and NBC Universal platform—will be renamed "That Channel That Airs Hockey" as a strategic move to help viewers better identify some programming currently shown on the cable network.
"That Channel That Airs Hockey, or TCTAH, is the cable home of the NHL, and we wanted our name to reflect that partnership," said Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Sports Group. "And while the rebranding won't make it any easier for people to find the channel since it's probably buried somewhere near HGTV or the SyFy Network, it was the best name we could come up with."
The group had discussed other possible names, but they were either considered too long or lacking any type of "punch."
"The 'If You Find Us, Hockey Might Be On Sometimes Network' didn't really portray the image we're seeking and our second choice of 'Hockey, Horse Racing, Notre Dame Football Highlights And Maybe Other Sports If We Obtain Broadcast Rights Channel' was much too wordy."
70 million households have no idea their cable or satellite provider currently offers the network.
