In the face of a currently weak Detroit area economy, several football players were still able to find high paying jobs with the Detroit Lions. Newly signed defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch hopes to be a positive example and an inspiration to residents of the Motor City that are still searching for gainful employment.
"This is a tough time for the residents of Detroit," said Vanden Bosch who signed a 4-year, $26 million deal. "But if I guy like myself can find a job playing a simple game, then other people can too."
Also finding a job with the Lions was receiver Nate Burleson.
"I'm just happy to be working again," said Burleson. "Especially as a wide receiver. I applied at a few other places, mostly sales and a couple manual laborer jobs, but I just couldn't turn down $11 million guaranteed to play football."
The Lions are reportedly taking a look at another free agent, Bob Parkey, 50, who was last employed as an assembly worker for General Motors. Parkey last played football in 1978 on his high school's JV team, but has put on considerable weight since high school and the Lions think he could fit somewhere on special teams.
