Players on the Baltimore Orioles are shocked that former ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst and current manager Buck Showalter has actually managed before, figuring he was just some guy that talked about baseball for a couple hours a night on TV.
"When they told me our new manager was that guy from Baseball Tonight I thought they were joking, but I've been really impressed with him so far," said catcher Matt Wieters. "I had no idea he managed before. At first I thought 'What does a guy on TV know about managing a baseball team?' Then I figured at least as much as we know about playing baseball, so it's a perfect match."
Several of the Orioles say they used to watch Baseball Tonight all the time, trying to pick up little pointers on how to play the game of baseball correctly.
"We used to watch Buck and those other guys almost every night," said designated hitter Luke Scott. "No one was really sure if Buck had a clue what he was talking about, 'cause we don't know too much about baseball, but what he said usually seemed to make sense. I guess I can't really say. Some of the baseball terms he'd use during those instructional segments like 'bunt' and 'cutoff man' were completely foreign to us."
After guiding the Orioles to a two game win streak, Showalter is now the third winningest manager in team history.
