A group of protesters descended on the Major League Baseball offices, urging commissioner Bud Selig to move the Arizona Diamondbacks to AAA because of the team's last-place record, league worst ERA, and just all-around low level of play.
Protesters held signs, handed out fliers, and chanted such things as "Hey baseball, the Diamondbacks are really, really bad" and "Bud Selig, what are you doing, have you watched the Diamondbacks?"
"I think our chants really lessened the effectiveness of our protest," said the organizer of the group. "We could have been a little more clever and concise there. Chants have never been our strong suit. Banners and fliers are more our thing, but I'm pretty sure we got our point across. Baseball's own security guards joined in the demonstration, so we must have done something right."
Commissioner Bud Selig said he was shocked at the behavior of his security staff.
"I'm very disappointed by their actions," said Selig. "They waited at least 30 or 45 minutes to join the protest. If I were them, I would have jumped in right away. Unfortunately as commissioner, I couldn't participate. Eliminating the Diamondbacks is definitely in baseball's best interests."
Selig is working on an agreement to transfer the D-Backs to the Pacific Coast League, but figures the Arizona legislature will somehow try to send the club to the Mexican League.
