Thanks to a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Florida Marlins to wrap up the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates successfully achieved their annual goal of playing each and every game that Major League Baseball puts on their schedule.

"In spring training, all of our efforts were focused on getting through a complete 162 game season," said general manager Neal Huntington. "It's a grind playing baseball everyday. Anyone that's ever watched this team would attest to that. But we stuck with it and threw together some type of line-up each and every day. It's about all we could ask with this roster."

Huntington says it takes a lot of luck to play all 162, and points to losing one game last year to a rainout as an example.

"Weather is always unpredictable, but we're proud to say the only thing slowing down the Pittsburgh Pirates is mother nature. And maybe player development. And also the rest of the National League."

The club's 57-105 record was disappointing to fans, but team president Frank Coonelly hopes the players had fun, which he feels is most important.

"There's more to the game than winning and losing, like building self confidence and bonding as a team when you go out for pizza and ice cream after a game. That's what really counts."

Coonelly says he looks forward to giving out participation trophies to each player at the Pirates end of season banquet at Dave and Buster's.
