Inspired by a win over the Marlins followed by a three game sweep of interleague rival Washington, the Baltimore Orioles are looking to climb into fourth place in the American League East by extending their current winning streak another fifty games.
"We've know we've got a lot of work to do," said interim manager Juan Samuel. "But if we can just continue our current momentum for another two months or so, we should be right back in this thing. The Blue Jays better watch out."
Jeremy Guthrie, Sunday's starting pitcher, says the past weekend is just a sign of things to come for the Orioles.
"It was nice to be on the winning side of a sweep for once, and we plan on doing that a bunch more before the summer is over. Of course sweeping seventeen series in a row won't be easy, but from our recent history you can see we've never done things the easy way in Baltimore."
Samuel understands the likelihood of a fifty-four game win streak is minimal, but neither he nor his players want to finish in last place.
"It's the goal we've set. We want to finish in fourth place in the American League East. To get there, it was either win fifty-four games in a row or hope the Blue Jays are stricken with a team-wide measles outbreak. Which seems more likely to you?"
