Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says he and the members of his Special Committee for On Field Matters have discussed the possibility of expanding instant replay, but are waiting to make a final decision in case this whole technology craze is just a fad.
"Anything associated with technology always seems to be here, and before you know it, it's way outdated," said Selig. "I don't want to expand replay if it's going to go the way of my Sears Betavision hi-fi VCR. Do you know how tough it's been to find a replacement for that thing?"
Selig and MLB are pretty sure instant replay will be like some other sports fads that have come and gone, including the helmet cam, the glow puck, and the WNBA.
"Even though technology will almost certainly be on its way out, we'll continually analyze things to see if expanded replay is indeed in baseball's best interests. But we're confident the out of shape, aging men with progressively failing vision will be able to make correct calls for the foreseeable future."
Another sticking point for Selig, is the potential delays instant replay could cause, slowing the pace of the game.
"We don't want games delayed waiting for the replay thingamajig to warm up."
