To prepare him for a potential appearance in the ALCS, Yankees manager Joe Girardi had Joba Chamberlain throw a simulated 1/3 of an inning Wednesday, facing reserve catcher Francisco Cervelli and outfielder Austin Kearns in two at-bats that were almost like the real thing.
"In a possible seven game series, I'd be willing to use Joba up to 1/3 of an inning," said Girardi. "He's on the postseason roster, so we might as well get as much mileage out of him as we can. But it will have to be in Game 3 or earlier, otherwise there's no way he'd be available for the World Series."
Chamberlain, who hadn't touched a baseball since shagging fly balls during batting practice on October 3rd, thinks the 8-pitch simulation went pretty well, despite it being physically demanding.
"I was surprised Joe left me in there that long, but I felt pretty good for both at-bats, so that was definitely a positive," said Chamberlain. "Fatigue started to set in towards the end, but I almost threw double digit pitches, so that was to be expected."
The next step for Chamberlain will be a simulated game of sitting on a metal bench in the bullpen for three to four consecutive hours.
