Hitting coach and occasional batting practice pitcher Dave Magadan evidently had some nasty stuff before the most recent Red Sox game, as slumping designated hitter David Ortiz was baffled and completely overwhelmed by the pitches being thrown his way.

"Mags was dealing today," said Ortiz of Magadan lightly lobbing balls in his direction, a majority of them underhanded. "But I guess there's not much to do when a pitcher is mixing things up and hitting his spots."

Ortiz swung and missed badly most of the time, but was actually able to connect on a few swings. He dribbled some weak grounders past the pitcher's mound, and even hit a pop-up on the last pitch that almost reached the outfield grass.

"That last swing felt pretty good," said Ortiz. "A few more like that, I'll be hitting routine fly-balls in no time."
