In response to the blown call costing Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga his perfect game, baseball purists all across the country say everyone is overracting with their pleas to expand instant replay in Major League Baseball. Purists say human error adds a fascinating element to the game or something, you know?
"Expanded instant reply has no place in baseball," says Calvin Bohn from Cleveland Heights, who still cringes at the mention of a designated hitter. "Our nation's pastime has always had overweight, middle aged men deciding fair or foul, safe or out. It adds that element of......um.......whatever it is, it's really good and baseball needs it."
Added Philip Ardelson of Landon, Mississippi, who thinks bunting with less than two outs is always the way to go, "Baseball's human element is kind of.... it gives us that, that thing that replay would just....well, replay would probably screw things up worse than any human, right?"
Purists fear any expansion of replay would lead to fewer death threats directed at umpires, something that has long been a storied part of the game.
"I don't want to live in a world where a baseball umpire isn't threatened for blowing an obvious safe/out call," said Ardelson. "With replay you wouldn't have that. Are fans going to threaten a television monitor? Probably not. Besides, a television monitor won't be able to give baseball that, that factor of....um, well, you know what I mean."
