The New York Yankees payed tribute to longtime owner George Steinbrenner, as well as public address announcer Bob Sheppard before Friday's game, leading Alex Rodriguez to wonder what his Yankee Stadium ceremony would be like once he's passed. After all he's done to 'finally bring the Yankees a championship', the slugger is almost certain it will be 'so much better' than anything they did for George Steinbrenner.
"George did alot for the Yankees," said A-Rod. "Hey, he brought me here, which, as I'm sure you all remember was a really, really big deal. Next thing you know, BAM! We win the World Series only six years later. He deserved to be honored for that. Not entirely sure, but I think it was the first World Series the Yankees had ever won. Pretty special."
The night remembering Steinbrenner and Sheppard was filled with emotion, and Rodriguez himself was not immune.
"I'll admit, I was fighting back the tears when I wasn't included in either video montage highlighting the careers of those two guys, but I don't want to make this about me."
Overall, A-Rod thought the pregame tribute was incredible, leaving him to imagine the awe-inspiring things the Yankees will probably have in store for him.
"Whatever they pull off, I bet it'll be awesome. Maybe some fireworks or a laser show or something. I really don't know. It's just unfortunate that I'll be dead, 'cause I'd really like to see that. Hopefully they can resist the temptation to name the stadium after me."
Yankee front office personnel say they'll fight any possible urge to rename Yankee Stadium after Alex Rodriguez.
