A crazy free agency period in the NFL was condensed into one hectic week, and somehow or another among the hundreds of players changing rosters, quarterback Daunte Culpepper managed to sign with the Bengals for 5 years and $40 million, with $18 million guaranteed.
"Our front office was pretty much a free-for-all over the past several days, with player agents calling around the clock, and having to draft and revise contract after contract," said Cincinnati owner Mike Brown, who hasn't quite figured it out but believes Culpepper signed an offer that was intended for someone else. "It was like an assembly line of players—'Sign and date here, please'—I guess we should have paid better attention to who was getting in here to sign the contract. But not all is lost, we're pretty screwed at quarterback since Carson Palmer retired so we might as well give him a shot. We're fortunate anyone at all wants to play for this organization."
Culpepper is expected to compete for a roster spot with 3rd string quarterback Dan LeFevour.
