Jeff Balke/FlickrAccording to league sources, Rick Adelman did not retire from coaching several years ago, and, starting with the 2007-08 season, he has been serving as the head man for the Houston Rockets.
"Following stints with three small market teams, everyone assumed that was it," the source said of Adelman's 17 seasons as head coach with Portland, Golden State and Sacramento — Western Conference teams typically not in the national spotlight. "But the Houston Rockets have confirmed that Rick Adelman has indeed been sitting on their sideline calling time-outs and drawing up plays for the past three-and-a-half years."
Rockets forward Luis Scola says it makes perfect sense that Adelman has been the team's head coach.
"We just thought he was some dude following us around that held a clipboard, yelling a bunch and gesturing like a mad man. Showing up at our team meals on the road seems a lot less creepy now considering he's actually been an employee of the Rockets."
Scola wishes he'd paid closer attention to game plans since Adelman's apparent hiring.
