Keith Allison/FlickrThough he appreciates the idea that someone, somewhere could be comparing him to the role playing guard on the Chicago Bulls' first 3 championship teams, Mario Chalmers says he has to accomplish a lot more in his career if he is going to hold a candle to B.J. Armstrong.
"He was the fifth or maybe the sixth most important player on a team that won three rings," said Chalmers, who thinks the similarities in height, weight, position, team role and—though not politically correct—skin pigmentation with Armstrong probably led a handful of people out there to compare the two. "B.J. is the kind of player that slips your mind for awhile, but you remember him when you think really hard about those 'other guys' that played with Hall of Famers on championship teams and you think 'That guy wasn't half bad.' I've got a long way to go to reach that level."
Chalmers says he will forever but indebted to not only Armstrong, but other so-so, forgotten role playing shooting guards with multiple rings that came before him.
"Until I can ride the coattails of the superstars on my team to two, three or even four rings, I can't sit here and say I'm in the same class as B.J. Armstrong, or any of those other guys I'm unable to think of at this moment. Give me a couple seconds, I'm totally drawing a blank right now."
