Keith Allison/FlickrThe Yankees and Red Sox were forced to play "just another humdrum series" over the weekend, as they are no longer considered rivals since someone from one of the clubs forgot to file the proper paperwork with the offices of Major League Baseball prior to the season.
"This rarely occurs, but this kind of thing has happened before," said MLB Commissioner Bud Selig referring to the Brewers and Mariners letting their rivalry expire in the mid-80s. "But that was voluntary. No one knew that Milwaukee and Seattle had anything going, including myself and I owned the Brewers at the time."
Selig says the Yankees and Red Sox can be deemed rivals again, but will have to wait until next year, assuming they submit the proper forms and pay the annual renewal fee before the deadline at the end of spring training.
"I'll stand in line myself at the MLB rivalry renewal office so Boston and New York can officially hate each other again," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. "Even though will be nice to go a full year without every game being treated like it's Game 7. That gets a little nauseating."
ESPN is filing an appeal with Major League Baseball to renew the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry for this season, because, let's face it, no one really cares about Dodgers-Giants.
