"Joy reigns in Packerland. Brett Favre has struck out." That was the headline this morning from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The greatest quarterback in Packer history and the greatest quarterback in Viking history was battered and beaten in the Superdome, one game away from the Super Bowl. Despite all of the hype and Deanna Favre camera shots, I found myself rooting for Favre just a little bit yesterday. Part of me wanted to see Favre and Peyton Manning go head to head on the biggest of stages as arguably the two best quarterbacks in NFL history, but I am content with the result.

I am also content in knowing that the Vikings will now have to wait on the Favre retirement decision, and the longer it goes on the longer they will have to wait to prepare for the 2010 season. The Vikings will have options if Favre makes his decision quickly. ESPN, on their rumor page for the NFL, has linked the Vikings to Donovan McNabb already:

"Have we seen the last game for Donovan McNabb in Philly? If so, it could dovetail nicely with Brett Favre's last game in Minnesota, in that Vikings head coach Brad Childress -- who coached McNabb for seven years -- might be in the market for a veteran replacement, given the nausea-inducing alternatives (Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels). We think Vikes fans would take a little of McNabb's Willie Beamen impression over those two 10 times out of 10."

Unlike many out there, I was not happy to see Favre fail. It did nothing for me to see Brett throw what I believe will be his last pass into the arms of an opposing player. What I would like to see is Favre make his third and final retirement speech and exit the NFC North having played possibly his greatest season at the age of 40. As a fan of another team in that same division, I would like bid him adieu and watch the Vikings enter into the Sage Rosenfels or Tavaris Jackson era.
