Get to know Elston Turner

Like the Bulls, I’m taking my time to evaluate all the possible head coaches. It’s hard because most of them have no track record (Elston Turner), have been out of the league for so long it’s difficult to put a finger on their style (Doug Collins), or whose careers were so up and down that, again, it’s difficult to say where they rank as a head coach (Byron Scott and Lawrence Frank).

Also, there are a lot of names; really, it's hard to find a place to start.

The Bulls are taking their time as well, so I don't feel bad or too far behind. Anyways, enough rambling, let’s start where the Bulls started: Elston Turner.

In no way is Elston Turner the hottest assistant coaching prospect available; that would be Tom Thibodeau. Still, Turner’s résumé is good enough that his hiring wouldn’t compare to Vinny Del Negro's in terms of being a complete disaster. How's that for a compliment?

What would make this hire a disaster is the assumptions that would go with it. I feel confident saying if Turner is hired, the Bulls will not/would not have signed LeBron James. Solely because of that, I have no interest in Turner and I think it would be a bad hire.

As for the résumé, he’s a long-time assistant to Rick Adelman -- both in Houston and Sacramento. Other than that, I don’t know much else to say about him.

Clippers blogger and ESPN contributor Kevin Arnovitz does know some things and he dropped some Turner knowledge when breaking down the Clippers’ potential head coaches for ESPN Los Angles. With that, I get out of the way ... for the most part.

“Turner is a key reason the Rockets consistently take the floor as one of the best-prepared teams in the league.”

That’d be different.

“He earns universal praise for his grasp of the pro game and, just as important, his ability to communicate that knowledge to players.”

Again, this would be a nice change of pace from the last two and a half seasons. Too many times it was easy to wonder if players were listening or cared what Del Negro had to say. Beyond even the obvious time when the media literally asked the players if they respected Vinny.

“The Rockets’ cross-matching, defensive flexibility and prompt rotations gave the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers fits last spring, and much of that effort was conceived by Turner on the Rockets’ dry erase board.”

All of this sounds good. When I think of the Rockets, I think of Daryl Morey and the Rockets way of evaluating talent. Along with how often the get more out of the talent than most any team in the league.

But, at least in one man's opinion, Turner and the coaching staff deserve some credit, too.

Right now, Turner sounds alright, does he not? It gets better. That is assuming Turner would install Adelman’s offensive philosophy -- which as Arnovitz points out, rookie head coaches whose primary focus is on defense tend to do.

“In Turner’s case, that would mean installing Adelman’s read-and-react corner offense ... The Adelman motion-oriented system is a smart combination of improvisation and structure. There is very little play calling from the sideline.”

Right now the Bulls don’t have a good corner player: someone who can hit the corner three (one of the best, most important shots in basketball) on a consistent basis. Luol Deng has improved from the outside and the fact that the corner 3 is the shortest three-pointer makes him a viable option at that spot. However, Kirk Hinrich did the opposite of improve. After that, there's really no one else to go there. Although, I guess there's really no one else currently on the roster, so that could change.

This kind of offense would require another shooter or two to run efficiently, but it would fit Derrick Rose perfectly. Plus, I would prefer a new head coach who doesn't want to control Derrick Rose and every play by calling it on the sideline.

“But players have specific imperatives to space, cut and screen within the confines of a three-man game.”

For everyone besides Rose, there'd be structure. A good thing.

_____

Even though Turner has already interviewed for the job, he has to be consiered a long shot. For the reason mentioned above, the Bulls have their sights set on bigger and better things. And I'm glad they do. But shosuld the Bulls get stuck with option No. 3, No. 4 or whatever Vinny was, and Turner's the choice, I feel a whole better about it now.

Based on Arnovitz's assessment and others, the Bulls could do far worse. Another ringing endorsement by me.
